Chapter Fifteen - Rhia

Over the next few weeks, Sabrina and I fall into an easy routine of me collecting Piper from school, and then Sabrina coming back to mine after her shift at the restaurant. Soon, she’s spending so much time at my place that we joke about moving in together, and perhaps her transferring Piper to the same school as Teagan.

I have to admit, I’m a little disappointed when Sabrina tells me one day that Dana has hired an assistant baker to help with the workload and that they’re starting to plan the in-house bakery. While it means a career advancement for Sabrina, and that she’ll actually have more time to spend with Piper, it also means she’s having to stop over at mine less and less. I suppose it’s a good thing we don’t move too fast, and start living together while we’ve only just begun dating, but I can’t lie, I miss waking up in her arms every morning.

It’s the day of Piper’s eleventh birthday, and Sabrina has the day off for the huge party her parents have planned. They’ve hired out a venue, caterer, and entertainment in the form of a kids’ DJ and character actors who perform as well-known kids’ characters like Disney Princesses and superheroes.

It’s a couple of hours before the party is due to begin, and we’re at Sabrina’s apartment as she puts the finishing touches to Piper’s cake (“Why hire someone to do it, when you’re a damn good baker yourself?”) and the girls dress in their costumes. Teagan, with her long blonde hair, is dressed as Harley Quinn as portrayed in the DC Superhero Girls cartoon, and Piper is dressed like Wonder Woman from the same cartoon.

“What do you think?” Sabrina asks, turning the cake around so I can see it. She’s baked a seven-layer rainbow cake, with white buttercream frosting and rainbow sprinkles.

“It looks magnificent,” I say honestly.

Sabrina smiles nervously. “Are you sure? It doesn’t look exactly like the photo Piper found online.”

Sabrina slides her phone across to me, where the screen is on and a picture of a similar-looking cake is open, though the one in the picture is nowhere near as impressive as the one Sabrina has baked.

“Are you kidding me? The one in the picture looks like crap in comparison. You’ve done amazingly!”

“Okay,” Sabrina says, though her tone tells me she’s still not sure she believes me. She carefully lifts it into a plastic carrying case meant to protect it while it’s in the car, and then takes it down to her car, while I get the girls.

“Okay, kids, party time,” I say, sticking my head in the living room where Piper is chasing Teagan around, trying to ‘arrest’ her for stealing the treasure – the badge, with the number eleven on in a huge font that Sabrina bought for Piper to wear to the party.

Teagan hands Piper the badge. She pins it on her chest, and then the two girls run out of the living room and through the front door before I even have a chance to grab my purse.
